Elbow joint replacements used to be more commonly used for late stage rheumatoid arthritis, but they are being increasingly used for late stage osteoarthrosis and repair of complex elbow fractures.
Although it obviously flexes and extends like a hinge joint, it also has a very small amount of motion in the coronal plane. A "semiconstrained" prosthesis ("sloppy hinge") permits a small amount of motion in this plane.
