What is the typical way to access the portal vein for portal vein embolization?

The most common route is percutaneous transhepatic. Originally, the procedure was done invasively in the operating room with a transileocolic approach. A percutaneous trans-splenic approach, as is rarely used for complicated TIPS, is theoretically possible, but not well-documented.
