Radiology plays a role in investigating confusion and altered consciousness.

Although the majority of cases will be secondary to infection or medication or underlying cognitive impairment, there are a number of emergency and reversible causes that lead to altered mental state.

Imaging can aid diagnosis and treatment, and also allow some prognosis in cases of altered consciousness or confusion. Having a solid history is also important as the differential diagnoses can still be wide and a number of tests may be required especially with fluctuant patients.
