Mumford procedure

Last revised by Frank Gaillard on 12 Apr 2024

The Mumford procedure is the distal resection of the clavicle to relieve pain of a damaged acromioclavicular joint.

The open or arthroscopic procedure involves the removal of approximately 1 cm of the distal clavicle (5). Post-surgical physiotherapy is recommended to prevent the development of stiffness or frozen shoulder.

Distal clavicle excision was first described as an open technique by Mumford and Gurd in 1941(3).
