About 100 mL of diluted barium was taken orally; this showed markedly dilated lower two-thirds of the oesophagus, barium fluid debris, and air levels were seen in the oesophagus. Rather poor oesophageal peristalsis in addition to a markedly narrowed lower oesophageal sphincter were noted.
Appearances are most consistent with primary oesophageal achalasia.
