Presentation
The history of myelomeningocele during the neonatal period was repaired surgically. Now the patient presents with chronic urinary bladder emptying difficulty and recurrent urinary tract infections.
Patient Data
The urinary bladder has a tree-like shape with wall hypertrophy, resulting in an irregular outline.
Features compatible with Christmas tree appearance of neurogenic bladder.
There is spina bifida occulta at the S1 level.
Case Discussion
A Christmas tree bladder, also known as a pine cone bladder, is a radiographic appearance characterized by the presence of multiple small diverticula in the bladder wall. This appearance is typically observed in individuals with severe neurogenic bladder and increased sphincter tone. Bladder neck obstruction due to non-neurogenic causes can also present similarly, making it not pathognomonic.
