Discoid lateral meniscus - parameniscal cyst

Presentation

Pain with locking of the left knee.

Patient Data

Age: 8 years
Gender: Female

The MRI sequences demonstrate;

  • an abnormal width of the lateral meniscus (27 mm) on coronal sequences, which is visible on more than three images on sagittal sequences with an abnormal thickened bow tie appearance
  • anterior parameniscal cyst is noted, protruding into Hoffa's fat pad well-visualized on sagittal and axial PD fat sat with an abnormal intrinsic high signal (degeneration) with a horizontal tear of the anterior horn
  • small knee joint effusion
  • normal appearance of the medial meniscus, cruciate and collateral ligaments
