Low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma

Case contributed by Paul Nyaga Njoroge
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Painless axillary swelling.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Multiple well-circumscribed heterogenous solid masses are noted within the subcutaneous tissue at the left axilla region extending posteriorly to the back.

They demonstrate cystic changes and punctate calcifications.

On color Doppler, the masses elucidate minimal internal vascularity.

No nerve or vessel involvement was noted.

These findings are consistent with multiple myxoid soft tissue tumors.

Biopsy confirmed Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma.

Case Discussion

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma are rare malignant tumors classified under myoxoid soft tissue tumors. They have an inconspicous spindle cell appearance in a combination of collagenous to myxoid stroma. They occur mostly in young adults, presenting as a slow growing, painless mass in the deep soft tissue mostly of the trunk and proximal extremities. They rarely occur in the mediastinum, the abdominal cavity and the retroperitoneum. In children they often occur in the superficial soft tissues of the head and neck.
