Pigmented villonodular synovitis - ultrasound

Presentation

Known case of pigmented villonodular synovitis. Referred for radiograph and knee ultrasound.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

Radiographs: joint space reduction, dense soft tissue shadow involving the joint.

Ultrasound: hypoechoic well-defined masses with vascularity in suprapatellar - infrapatellar region, along medial-lateral joint lines, posterior aspect of the knee.

Herniation of synovial proliferation through previous arthroscopy port sites - both sides of patella.

Editor's note: Per the 2020 WHO Soft Tissue and Bone Tumors Classification (5th ed.), the recommended terminology is tenosynovial giant cell tumor with pigmented villonodular synovitis no longer recommended (although remains in common use).
