The flexor pollicis brevis muscle is a short muscle of the thenar eminence located distal to the abductor pollicis brevis. It is one of the intrinsic muscles of the hand. The muscle is composed of a superficial head and a variably sized deep head.
Summary
-
origin:
- superficial head: tubercle of the trapezium and flexor retinaculum
- deep head (if present): the trapezoid and capitate bones
- insertion: proximal phalanx of the thumb
- action: flexes thumb at metacarpophalangeal joint
- arterial supply: superficial palmar arch
-
innervation:
- superficial head: recurrent branch of median nerve (C5 - T1)
- deep head: deep branch of ulnar nerve (C8 - T1)
