Presentation
The patient has been experiencing a headache and facial pain for the past 4 months.
Patient Data
Thickening and sclerosis of the walls of the right maxillary sinus, with opacification of the sinus lumen. "Eggshell calcifications" are also observed predominantly located peripherally towards the sinus ostium , which suggests nonfungal disease.
No major anatomical variants are seen.
Case Discussion
Chronic sinusitis is defined as the persistence of inflammatory changes in the mucosa of the paranasal sinuses that last more than 12 weeks, often with a polymicrobial origin.
CT is the ideal evaluation method because it allows to confirm the anatomy and the presence of anatomical variants that may predispose to this disease. There may be similar imaging features in acute and chronic cases of sinusitis. However, thickening and sclerosis of the sinus walls is usually a characteristic finding of chronic involvement. Furthermore, the presence of intrasinus calcifications, according to their location and morphology, may suggest associated fungal involvement.
