Dislocation of the elbow with avulsion of the medial epicondyle

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Painful elbow following fall.

Patient Data

Age: Child

Fracture-dislocation of the elbow. The capitellum and radial head ossification centers are noted. An additional ossified focus is seen on lateral projection in the trochlear groove which must represent an avulsed medial epicondyle.

Surface-shaded CT better demonstrates the avulsion of the medial epicondylar ossification center and adjacent bone potentially mimicking a trochlear ossification center.

Case Discussion

Fracture-dislocation of the elbow with avulsion of the medial epicondyle which is laterally subluxed. Remembering the order in which the elbow ossified (CRITOE) is essential.
