Diagnosis probable

Presentation

A patient of 12 weeks gestation presented for an ultrasound after her Obstetrician couldn't detect a heartbeat.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

TVS ultrasound showed a hyperflexed fetal neck with a well-defined anechoic lesion in the posterior aspect of the neck showing acoustic enhancement. No evidence of internal septae was noted within the lesion.

Mild ascites noted.

Diffuse subcutaneous oedema noted.

Case Discussion

A transvaginal ultrasound study showed a well-defined anechoic lesion in the posterior aspect of the neck of infants with no internal septae and a volume measuring less than 75 cc.

Also noted are subcutaneous oedema, and ascites depicted in the images 1.

Most common in the cervicothoracic regions, they can be associated with Turners, Downs, Edwards, and Patau syndrome.
