Presentation

Trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

There is a thin, lucent oblique fracture line in the fifth metacarpal shaft without extension to the carpometacarpal and metacarpophalangeal joints. No displacement or stepping is noted.

Mild subchondral sclerosis is seen in the radiocarpal joint.

Positive ulnar variance is also observed.

Case Discussion

This case shows a subtle, oblique fracture in the fifth metacarpal shaft without extending into nearby joints. Reviewing trauma patients' x-ray images in two views is crucial. Additional specialized views might be necessary at times.
