Presentation

Antenatal ultrasound shows a brain cyst.

Patient Data

Age: Neonate
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Evidence of a large, well-defined cystic lesion seen in the left hemisphere communicates with the ipsilateral lateral ventricle, measuring 50 x 46 mm. It shows no color flow on Doppler study and is covered with a thin layer of the cerebral cortex. It also shows turbid internal content inside.

mri

Left fronto-parietal cyst measuring 8 x 4 x 3.5 cm communicates with the left lateral ventricle, replacing the related brain parenchyma. It shows dependent likely small blood intensities and causes minimal midline shift to the right side.

Mild dilatation of the right lateral ventricle is noted.

The left lateral ventricle temporal and occipital horns, as well as the third and fourth ventricles, are not dilated.

Case Discussion

  • the porencephalic cyst is a congenital disorder of the central nervous system

  • it is formed of a cavity filled with CSF in the brain's parenchyma

  • it is caused by ischemia; hemorrhage after birth or less commonly as a consequence of abnormal development

  • the porencephalic cyst can be located in any lobe of the brain
