Pre- and post-contrast MRI demonstrates the S1 nerve root to be surrounded by enhancing scar tissue in the right side.

Failed back syndrome refers to the persistent leg and/or lumbar back pain after a surgical procedure. The pathophysiology of this syndrome is complex, as often the operation was technically successful.
