Scaphocephaly

Case contributed by Abhinay Krishna Panda
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Elongated anterior to posterior skull vault.

Patient Data

Age: 2 months
Gender: Male

Axial skull CT

ct

Axial non-contrast and bone window showing signs of scaphocephaly. The sagittal suture is fully fused while coronal, frontal, lambdoid, and squamous sutures remain unfused and patent. The skull vault is elongated anterior to posterior as a result.

3D skull

ct

3D image reconstruction of CT showing fusion of sagittal suture allowing for clinical confirmation of the scaphocephaly.

Case Discussion

Scaphocephaly describes a narrow and long skull shape due to craniosynostosis of the sagittal suture, It is the most common suture to fuse early and generally requires surgical intervention to resolve.

CT scans are the preferred imaging as they can indicate the fused suture by implementing 3D imaging reconstruction to give a better view of the affected skull. The anterior to posterior elongation of the skull is a common finding in 3D imaging to identify scaphocephaly. In some cases, ultrasonography may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis and avoid the radiation dose given 1.
