Transient lateral patellar dislocation

Presentation

Knee pain.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female

Small knee joint effusion. Avulsion fracture of the medial patellofemoral ligament/medial patellar retinaculum as it attaches onto the medial patella with mild marrow edema. Hyperintensity within the adjacent Hoffa’s fat pad is noted. There is reciprocal marrow edema within the lateral femoral condyle. Hyperintensity overlying the proximal medical collateral ligament, which is intact.

Typical knee contusion pattern of transient lateral dislocation of the patella with an avulsion fracture of the medial patella involving the medial patellofemoral ligament/medial patellar retinaculum.
