Perinatal asphyxia which may result either in utero or postnatally, is the single most important cause of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy as a consequence of global hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Multicystic encephalomalacia is the long term sequelae of this profound ischemic brain insult.
