Cerebral amyloid deposition diseases are a group of related conditions characterised by the accumulation of cerebral amyloid-β (Aβ) in various parts of the central nervous system. They lead to inflammation, neurotoxicity, and vascular friability, and are typically encountered in the elderly.
Four main conditions are recognised, and these are discussed separately 1:
-
Alzheimer disease (most common)
-
cerebral amyloid angiopathy (common)
-
inflammatory cerebral amyloid angiopathy (rare)
-
cerebral amyloidoma (very rare)
Additionally, novel amyloid-lowering therapies can lead to imaging abnormalities during treatment, known as amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) and sharing many similarities with inflammatory cerebral amyloid angiopathy 2.
