Iliopsoas bursitis usually presents as non-specific anterior hip pain and can be due to a number of causes, the three main causes being acute trauma, overuse injuries, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Iliopsoas bursitis can occur primarily, e.g. overuse, secondary to a snapping iliopsoas tendon, post-hip arthroplasty. The iliopsoas bursa frequently communicates with the hip joint and intra-articular pathology (e.g. osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis) can result in an iliopsoas bursitis 1,2.
Other causes include trauma, osteonecrosis, synovial chondromatosis, tenosynovial giant cell tumour, gout, and pyogenic infection 4.
