Posterior cranial fossa

The posterior cranial fossa is the most posterior aspect of the skull base, housing the brainstem and cerebellum. It is also the largest and deepest of the three cranial fossae 1.

The posteior fossa primarily communicates with the supratentorial compartment through the tentorial notch (or incisura) and to the spinal canal through foramen magnum. Numerous additional foramina allow for vessels and nerves to enter/exit the posterior fossa.
