Presentation
Known diabetic. Pre operative cardiac evaluation for an ovarian mass resection.
Patient Data

There is an abnormal saccular malformation that causes protrusion of the interatrial septum overlying the fossa ovalis region. The protrusion is approximately 10 mm beyond the plane of the interatrial septum towards the right atrium.
There is no atrial septal defect, no patent foramen ovale.
Normal biventricular systolic function, normal cardiac chamber sizes.
Case Discussion
An atrial septal aneurysm can exist alone or in conjunction with another abnormality. The most common relationship is between patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD). One of the major complications of atrial septal aneurysm is systemic thromboembolism, which is likely due to stagnating left atrial blood flow, which promotes blood clot formation.
