Presentation
Known ulcerative colitis. Presented with abdominal pain and bloating.
Patient Data

Submucosal fat deposition (measured by calipers on the longitudinal view) in the rectum in keeping with known chronic proctitis.
Case Discussion
Submucosal fat deposition can result from a variety of causes, such as chronic inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease); post-chemotherapy and post-radiotherapy, celiac disease and now more commonly in obese patients (in particular with accompanying metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance). In a case of known ulcerative colitis, the appearance of submucosa fat infiltration is most likely due to chronic change.
