ultrasound

Sagittal view of an 18-week fetus.

Pay attention to the course of the aorta and IVC.

The aorta runs close to the spinal column in the abdominopelvic and thoracic cavities.

The IVC runs parallel to the aorta from the level of aorta bifurcation to the renal vessels.

But immediately after the separation of the renal vessels, the IVC moves anteriorly and deviates from the aorta, as the IVC ultimately leads to the right atrium.

In other words, the inferior vena cava (IVC) takes off from the aorta after the separation of the renal vessels (IVC takeoff sign).

Case Discussion

From 11 weeks to 40 weeks, the absence of the IVC takeoff sign indicates IVC Interruption + Azgus continuation of IVC.
