Presentation

Severe pain and immobilization of the little finger after trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Intra-articular avulsion fracture of the dorsal aspect of the base of the distal phalanx of the 5th finger.

Case Discussion

Mallet finger is a triangular avulsion fragment fracture at the insertion of the common extensor tendon on the dorsal aspect of the distal phalanx at the DIP joint.

Usually treated by a splint maintaining the DIP joint in fixed hyperextension.
