There is diffuse opacification and granular appearance of the lungs with multiple air bronchograms.
A feeding tube is seen with its tip below the diaphragm in the region of the fundus of the stomach.
Case Discussion
This is the typical appearance of respiratory distress syndrome, a condition of the premature infants due to birth prior to the natural surfactant production.
the main differential diagnoses are:
neonatal pneumonia (particularly group B Streptococcus).
transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). lung volumes are normal to slightly hyperinflated in transient tachypnea of the newborn and decreased in respiratory distress syndrome
