Superficial peroneal nerve sheath tumour

Case contributed by Ali Abdullah Obaid
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Swelling and pain in the right upper leg for three months.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Male

The anterolateral upper leg over the head of the fibula shows a well-defined, mixed solid and cystic lesion, oval-shaped with cord-like continuation at the upper and lower end of the lesion at the expected location of the superficial peroneal nerve.

Case Discussion

The ultrasound findings are very convincing of a peripheral nerve sheath tumour of the superficial peroneal nerve; a cystic component and eccentricity favour a schwannoma over a neurofibroma.
