Pilon fracture or tibial plafond fractures are classified into three subtypes:

• type A: intact articular surface, metaphyseal fractures, the shaft may be involved
• type B: partially involved articular surface, partial metaphyseal fractures, the shaft may be involved
• type C: involved articular surface, metaphyseal fractures, the shaft may be involved
