Pneumomediastinum from blunt trauma

Discussion:

Pneumomediastinum is common in blunt trauma, occurring in up to 10% of patients. Most commonly a discrete cause is not identified and pneumomediastinum may be secondary to the Macklin effect.

Uncommonly (< 2%), pneumomediastinum may also be secondary to esophageal or tracheobronchial rupture.
