The bilateral neurocentral synchondroses (NCS) are cartilaginous growth plates between the single anterior and the bilateral neural arch ossification centers to allow the vertebral arch to grow in keeping with the spinal cord ¹. By the age of 14 years, these sutures have fused and can no longer be observed on MR images ².
