Right-sided aortic arch

Discussion:

This case demonstrates the finding of a right-sided aortic arch.

Learning points:

  • right-sided aortic arch is an anatomical variant with the arch of the aorta traversing to the right of the trachea
  • right-sided aortic arch is rare, occurring in ~0.1% of the general population
  • CXR findings consistent with right-sided aortic arch include:
    • 'mass' in the right paratracheal region
    • absence of left aortic contour
    • left tracheal deviation at the aortic arch
    • presence of right-sided descending thoracic aorta
