Solitary fibrous tumor (retroperitoneal)

Discussion:

The patient was referred to the regional sarcoma MDT and proceeded to ultrasound guided biopsy, which confirmed solitary fibrous tumor. Staging CT chest (not shown) did not demonstrate metastases.

Given the proximity to the right kidney, the patient proceeded to en bloc excision of the lesion with right nephrectomy. The subsequent histopathology confirmed solitary fibrous tumor, deemed of moderate risk based on the patient's age, size of tumor and frequency of mitoses.

Solitary fibrous tumors are rare and at the time of reporting other sarcomas including liposarcoma, were considered in the differential.

Given the moderate risk the patient is undergoing clinical and imaging follow up.
