Endometriosis

Discussion:

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of functional endometrial glands outside the uterus. Can be found in the pelvis or outside the pelvis either deep or superficial. Scar endometriosis is a known pathology commonly after Cesarean sections.

In this case, subcutaneous endometriosis is uncommon in this location and the definite diagnosis couldn't be done without a tissue biopsy, however, the presentation was typical of endometriosis (cyclical pain, growth and shrinking in size) due to the physiological cyclical hormonal response of the transplanted endometrial glands. The differential diagnosis was a desmoid tumor as the location was adjacent to a surgical port entry site, however, a core biopsy sample came back with the diagnosis of endometriosis.
