  • it is an overuse injury that occurs in the knee area of growing adolescents
  • the quadriceps muscle attaches to the shin bone below the knee cap (patella) via the thick patella tendon. The point of attachment of the patella tendon to the shin bone is the bony bump (tibial tuberosity) just below the knee
  • stress-induced inflammation and micro-fractures in the tibial tuberosity
  • young boys who participate in certain sports, including soccer, gymnastics, basketball, and distance running, are most at risk for this disease
