Pituitary siderosis of iron overload

Discussion:

Increased iron concentration in the anterior pituitary gland can cause cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with growth hormone deficiency. The increased iron accumulation in the gonadotropin cell leads to its death secondary to iron toxicity that is probably the cause of the reduced pituitary gland height in thalassemia patients with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
