Anorexia nervosa - thoracic manifestations

Discussion:

This patient had a long history of anorexia nervosa, manifesting on this chest x-ray as:

  • marked lack of subcutaneous fat
  • hyperinflated lungs possibly representing emphysema (can be due to autophagy)
  • narrowed cardiomediastinal contour (reduced cardiac mass and mediastinal fat)
  • thoracic vertebral crush fracture (related to osteopenia)
