Necrotizing submandibular infection

Discussion:

This is a case of a necrotizing submandibular infection. There were initial concerns for malignancy. Following excision and debridement of the mass, the histopathologic analysis of the affected submandibular area revealed multiple lymph nodes with near-total replacement by necrotizing granulomatous inflammation, chronic inflammation, and fibrosis. No areas of cellular atypia or malignancy were seen. Microbiologic analysis was positive for Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Corynebacterium pseudodipthheriticum. The patient responded well to antibiotic therapy following resection.
