Gluteus quartus muscle
Citation, DOI and article data
In the small published literature that exists, the origins of this accessory muscle have usually been the anterior superior or anterior inferior iliac spines. The insertions sites described have included the tendon of gluteus minimus, capsule of the hip joint, and the anterior intertrochanteric line 3.
The function of the gluteus quartus muscle is not known, but the homologous muscle in monkeys is important for internal rotation of the hip permitting tree climbing 2.
