- Interpeduncular vein
The peduncular veins (PV) or interpeduncular veins are veins of the brainstem and tributaries of the basal vein of Rosenthal, sometimes visible on imaging in the vicinity of the basilar artery tip and the proximal posterior cerebral artery.
Gross anatomy
The peduncular veins drain the cerebral peduncles, originate from the interpeduncular fossa and course laterally around the cerebral peduncles beneath the optic tract 1,2. They connect the anterior pontomesencephalic vein to the basal vein of Rosenthal 2,3 and might also form an anastomosis to the lateral mesencephalic vein 1.
Clinical importance
The peduncular veins might become obstructed as a result of transtentorial herniation 1. They might be potentially confused with a P1 segment of the posterior cerebral artery or with subarachnoid haemorrhage on non-contrast CT 1.
