Portal venous flow

Last revised by Joachim Feger on 8 Jul 2024

Portal venous flow is normally towards the liver (hepatopetal), with the normal main portal vein peak systolic velocities usually measuring 20-40 cm/s 1,3.

The mean flow velocity of portal vein in adults is 19.3 cm/s 6.

The normal peak systolic velocity of the portal vein in children ranges from 14 to 41cm/s 5.

The flow waveform is usually gently undulating but with pathological situations can turn to pulsatile portal venous flow 1.

In pathological situations, the flow velocity may decrease or even invert resulting in hepatofugal flow 1.
