Retrocalcaneal bursa

Last revised by Mostafa Elfeky on 4 Oct 2024

The retrocalcaneal bursa, also known as the subtendinous calcaneal bursa or the subachilleal bursa, is located deep to the Achilles tendon and superficial to the posterior angle of the calcaneus. It is distinct from the subcutaneous calcaneal bursa, located between the Achilles tendon and the skin. It can become inflamed and symptomatic leading to retrocalcaneal bursitis.
