Presentation

Left foot deformity since birth.

Patient Data

Age: 1 year
Gender: Male
x-ray

Amputation of the left foot bones and the distal tibia and fibula which both show pointing ends. A soft tissue tuft is seen at the site of the foot with absent bony structures within.

Case Discussion

Radiological features are impressive of congenital limb amputation, the sequel of amniotic band syndrome.

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) comprises of a wide spectrum of abnormalities, all of which result from entrapment of various fetal body parts in a disrupted amnion. Due to the randomness of entrapment, each affected individual has the potential to form a unique deficit.
