Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) - zero profile device

Case contributed by Tudor Hughes

C6/7 anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with zero-profile devices (in this instance Medtronic) with an integrated bone graft chamber has been performed. Prevertebral soft tissue swelling. Good alignment.

A follow-up study demonstrates expected resolution of prevertebral soft tissue swelling. Otherwise no change.

Case Discussion

A "zero-profile” device refers to an implant designed to sit flush with the anterior vertebral column without protruding into surrounding tissues, eliminating the need for traditional anterior plating systems. This has been shown to have similar fusion rates, but improved rates of dysphagia. It is also believed that zero-profile devices with anchored cages transmit less stress to adjacent segments thereby reducing adjacent segment degeneration 1.
