Case contributed by Dr Aditya Shetty

hydronephrosis on both sides on an ultrasound examination

Patient Data

Age: 25
Gender: Male

Spot film taken during an IVP shows bilateral duplex kidneys.

On the left side the ureters have fused at the level of L3 vertebra

On the right side both ureters have opened into the bladder.

Case Discussion

Bilateral duplex kidneys. Bifid ureter on the left side. Hence a partial duplication.

If seen carefully, on the right side, the ureter which is more medial is belongs to the superior pole moiety. This is accordance with Weigert-Meyer law.
