Foreign body-induced metacarpophalangeal joint septic arthritis

Thorn injury to the dorsal radial aspect of 2nd metacarpophalangeal joint 15 days ago. Complaining of local swelling, pain, and loss of affected joint movements.

Patient Data

Age: 35 yrs
Gender: Male

There is a linear echogenic focus (2 mm) abutting the 2nd metacarpal head on the dorsal radial aspect - a foreign body (thorn).There is erosion of metacarpal head on dorsal radial aspect.

There is a metacarpo-phalangeal joint effusion with synovitis. There is no tenosynovitis / tendon tear.

Case Discussion

Findings suggest foreign body (thorn) induced erosion of metacarpal head and metacarpo-phalangeal joint synovitis favouring septic arthritis. However, there is no surgical follow up available.
