Global hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury

Presentation

Attempted suicide with prolonged asphyxia and resuscitation after cardiac arrest. History of HIV and mucomycosis in left orbital region.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male
CT

Brain

CT show marked hypodensity in all basal ganglia, frontal and left occipital region. Loss of gray-white matter differentiation with extensive global brain oedema causing a loss of gyri and completely effacing the left lateral ventricle. In the orbital region, in relation to the sphenoid sinus and optic nerve, an already diagnosed, mucormycosis is observed

Case Discussion

This case shows a hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. Patient died hours afterwards.
