Illustration showing occlusive trimming of the distal parts of the intravertebral vascular tree, which is predominately central within the vertebral body, leading to a central growth deficit with a resultant H-shaped vertebra. This is classically seen in sickle cell anemia, but may be see in other diseases such as Gaucher disease.
