Non-functioning kidney on intravenous urography

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Previous left ureteric stone. Hydronephrosis on ultrasound.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Non-functioning left kidney, as demonstrated by no concentration or excretion from the left kidney at 1 hour.

Right side normal.

Case Discussion

Despite this patient having a resonably good renal cortex on ultrasound, this dynamic study, in the form of a traditional IVU, shows a non-functioning left kidney.

Traditional IVU, although less commonly used in most instances, still has some advantages over CT-IVU, such as observing the kidney over an extending time period, with the flexibility to decide during the study when to next image and when to stop further imaging.

It also has a lower overall dose than CT-IVU, despite recent advances in CT dose reduction.
