Pericardial effusion - large

Cardiology patient with breathlessness.

Patient Data

Age: 69
Gender: Male

Large pericardial effusion measuring 4cm in depth.

3.3cm aneurysm of the aortic arch.  Two smaller aortic diverticulae of the descending colon.

No dissection.  No intramural haematoma.

Small bilateral pleural effusions.

Case Discussion

A decent example of a large pericardial effusion.   The appearance is sometimes described as being like the tasty biscuit called 'oreo'.

There are many causes for a pericardial effusion.
